The word "cantera" means quarry in Spanish. These opals are mined directly from volcanic quarries in regions like Magdalena and Querétaro, Mexico. They form when silica-rich water fills gas bubbles (vesicles) and cracks in cooling rhyolite lava. As the water evaporates over millions of years, it hardens into opal right inside the rock. Cantera opals are cut and polished while still embedded inside the natural pinkish or grey rhyolite host rock.
